Boxing At The Olympics

Boxing At The Olympics
Boxing has been a staple event at every Summer Olympic Games since it was first introduced into the program at the 3rd games in 1904. There is one exception, in the 1912 games in Stockholm. This is actually because Swedish law banned the sport at the time. The London 2012 games welcomed the first introduction of Women taking part in the boxing program.

Since the 2012 Olympic Games, boxing has seen more than a 30% increase in participation across the UK. Not only are individuals pursuing it as a professional sport, but a large proportion of the nation is also partaking in the sport to improve their overall fitness.

We have put together our list of boxing must-haves:

Boxing Gloves & Bag:

Both gloves and a bag are pivotal pieces of equipment when it comes to boxing and training. Hitting the bag while practicing good form will improve your punches, body movement, and overall performance. Unlike shadowboxing-- another popular drill to help with technique-- a punching bag workout allows you to experience the force of impact when you punch.

Boxing gloves are cushioned gloves that boxers wear during matches and training sessions. They're designed to protect the wearer from injuries while fighting. The padding in boxing gloves helps soften blows from punches while also making it easier to land a punch without hurting your hands. Here at Perform Better we have a range of boxing gloves and bags including:

BlazePod:

BlazePod triggers your body’s natural response to sensory stimulation, enabling superior, fast, and coordinated movement.

Tap-sensitive pods powered by the BlazePod app provide visual cues, creating the ultimate Flash Reflex training system. BlazePod motivates you to react faster, push your limits and boost your performance. Activate a predefined activity or create your own. Challenge yourself or compete against others. Track data in real-time to improve fitness, technique and tactics. Perfect for boxing.

Ropes:

We are talking two types of ropes here, skipping ropes and training ropes.

Skipping/jumping rope helps you practice the ability to "stay light," keeping your weight on the balls of your feet, and quickly moving your body with all your weight positioned as such. Jumping rope is a great way to train your body into learning how to move around in the same manner that a boxer moves around the ring.

Training ropes are integral to many boxers' training plans, including Anthony Joshua. They are great for developing power and core stability. What's especially great about Battle Ropes for boxers is that they develop amazing endurance to help with fatigue management, which is a huge issue in every fight.

Weighted Vests:

A sand weighted vest is ideal for speed, agility, plyometric and strength training. Weighted vests are one of the best choices in fitness equipment to add resistance in your workouts and to be the best you need to take your training to the next level.

Medicine Balls:

Medicine Balls are essentially weighted balls of different types that can provide a different training stimulus. Medicine ball work is an effective way to challenge your core, you're using your core, especially the obliques, to provide stability while throwing the ball. In boxing, a strong core aids in better coordination and balance, transfer of power, and stronger and faster punches.

Power Wheel:

The Power Wheel  can give many muscles of the body a “power workout”, as it uses the resistance of your own bodyweight to work your abs more effectively. It is a great way to tone your lower and upper abs, as well as your obliques. It also works the muscles in your arms and legs; that’s because when you work with the ab roller, it uses momentum and force from the hips, legs, and arms to give you an effective workout.

All of these benefits can help you improve your boxing skills, but will also really help you increase your endurance. The ab roller is a great exercise for cross-training, as well as for overall fitness.
