- Gosia Bieniek - Performance Director

The team at Light Blue were opening a new, multi-disciplinary treatment facility nearby to their existing Cambridge clinic, in the area of Girton. The team provide strength and conditioning services as part of their treatment offering and needed to maximize the space, they had to allow them to delivery to both multiple 1-2-1 clients and group sessions.

As well as delivering on the functional and performance demands of the team, the installation had to be in keeping with the aesthetic of the rest of the clinic.

Perform Better were asked to consult on the project because of their experience and track record of providing turnkey solutions in a high-performance environment.

Light Blue Clinic Overview

Light Blue Clinic has two sites based in the centre of Cambridge, Goldie Boathouse and Girton. Cryotherapy Centre. The clinic provides Osteopathy, Strength & Conditioning, Cryotherapy service, specialised female athlete training approach as well as workplace wellbeing programs.
The Clinic has extensive partnerships with clubs and businesses in the area including the CUBC, Cantabrigian Rowing Club, Rob Roy Boat Club, Cambridge Volleyball Club and a variety of individual clients. They have also provided support for Team GB athletes James Cracknell OBE (Double Olympic Gold Medallist, Boat Race Winner – Rowing) and Melissa Wilson (GB 2020 Tokyo Team, Boat Race Winner.
Light Blue Clinic’s latest Cryotherapy Centre allows athletes and non-athletes to try a whole-body cryotherapy. A whole-body cryotherapy (WBC), speeds up recovery, minimises fatigue, reduces stress-induced exercise symptoms and improves recovery time from chronic or acute injuries.

Cryotherapy treatment could be scheduled according to a tailored periodized training programme, specifically to enhance recovery. There is not believed to be another four people cryochamber in the East Region, certainly not one that would be available for public use.

Project Brief

From an osteopathic point of view, the clinic uses a number of tools in order to give their patients correct diagnosis. If needed, treatment is provided and a thorough management plan discussed. The goal is to alleviate aggravating factors and enhance recovery time.
Once a diagnosis has been formed a patient would start a rehab programme. Light Blue Clinic’s approaches are evidence based and a patient would be given the most up to date exercise routine for a given musculoskeletal disorder.
Finally ,a strength and condition programme is designed and prescribed for the patient. Unfortunately, resistance training is commonly overlooked when an injury arises. The coaches approach aims to decrease the likelihood of injury reoccurrence by conditioning and then strengthening the tissue. Therefore, a brand new gym would further encourage clients to engage in strength training.

Solution

After a series of initial consultations, 3D design images were created that showed both the gym and how it worked within the wider space of the building. Bespoke modifications were also identified and signed off through technical drawings to ensure equipment would fit within the space and still be usable by the team.

Perform Better installed three reduced height half racks with modified pull up bars to allow use in the height restricted room. The flooring is interlocking EnduraTile30mm impact tiles with inset, branded platforms. This means the gym floor is all on one flush level.

Also installed were a range of concept2 cardio equipment, specialty bars, hex dumbbells and rack.
