Perform Better were selected to fully equipped the laboratory, which forms part of the £45m Carnegie School of Sport building at Leeds Beckett University.

With 12 Olympic standard lifting platforms, two of which have embedded force plates, an agility space and access to the outdoor athletics track.

The 4,100 sq ft facility will provide capacity for squads of athletes to train together, and the flexibility needed at this time for high performance training to be socially distanced.

“This important partnership will enable a number of our Master’s students to undertake important research programmes in the laboratory strengthening the links between our research and industry. We are especially pleased that through the partnership, we are welcoming back to campus alumni Alastair Yule, who through his work has contributed to the strength of sport in the UK.”



Leeds Beckett University has a 190-year history of education, which began with the founding of the Leeds Mechanics Institute in 1824.

The Carnegie College of Physical Training was opened in 1933 alongside the City of Leeds Training College. Its first warden was Ernest Major who created the foundation for its reputation for excellence in sports teaching.

In 1947 it was renamed Carnegie College of Physical Education, dropping ‘Training’ for the more academically focused ‘Education’. The City of Leeds and Carnegie College and the James Graham College (the former Leeds Day Training College created in 1959) joined Leeds Polytechnic in 1976.

In 1992 Leeds Polytechnic became Leeds Metropolitan University and in 2014 the University changed to Leeds Beckett University.

The University remain one of the most popular universities in the UK for sport education – the academic staff in sport were ranked second in the UK for research quality in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

The University are committed to creating inspirational teaching and learning spaces, which is why they have invested £45 million in a new, state-of-the-art Carnegie School of Sport building on our Headingley campus, co-locating our highly specialised teaching and research laboratories.

The new investment will create a base for undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, and will provide a hub for the elite athletes who use our sports performance expertise.

Opened in September 2020, the building houses several outstanding features, including a 60m indoor athletics track, nutrition teaching kitchen, high performance strength and conditioning facility, human movement research laboratory, two environmental chambers, and a Performance Analysis Lab in partnership with Catapult.

In addition there will be networking spaces for students, staff and visitors, a cafe, informal teaching space and learning support that will foster inter-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Perform Better Ltd also announced a new partnership agreement with the Carnegie School of Sport- Leeds Beckett University. The partnership will see Leeds Beckett University Carnegie School of Sport carry out Masters Research projects on a number of Perform Better’s leading Sports Science and Strength & Conditioning products.

Research will be carried out on the Optojump Modular system, the Microgate Witty SEM Reaction system, the 1080 Sprint Analysis system amongst other products. The research will help monitor specific performance metrics in new environments as well as to enhance and develop the products capabilities to assist performance coaches across the world in elite sport.

Peter Mackreth, Dean of the Carnegie School of Sport, added: “Our strength and conditioning laboratory, featuring state-of-the-art equipment provided by Perform Better, provides an ideal environment for advanced training of students, professional sports people, research, and the development of future coaches and conditioners.
